Lou has de Morsier syndrome, also known as septo-optic dysplasia (SOD), a rare congenital disorder.
What is septo-optic dysplasia?
It combines, to varying degrees, underdevelopment of the optic nerves, pituitary hormone deficiencies and abnormalities of the brain's midline structures. Diagnosis is made by brain MRI, and care is tailored to the symptoms.
How it affects Lou
- Visual problems: reduced visual acuity and nystagmus.
- Hormonal problems: Lou takes several hormone supplements.
- Brain abnormalities: moderate intellectual disability with autistic characteristics.
- Motor difficulties: muscle tone problems on the right side.
